QARI's Mission

Quincy Asian Resources, Inc’s (QARI) mission is to foster and promote the development of the social, cultural, economic and civic lives of Asian Americans to benefit the entire community.

Quincy, MA is fast gaining the name as Boston's second Chinatown. In the city of Quincy, there was a 140% growth in persons identifying themselves as Asian between 1990 and 2000, according to the U.S. Census bureau of 2000. A large number of businesses and social services in Quincy are recognizing the increasing presence of bilingual customers and clients. As Asian Americans branch out from living close to Chinatown they are looking for services that they can access locally.

Quincy is a prime location for affordable housing, good schools, and public transportation. In the past few years, Chinese marketplaces and banks have opened up in the area. One of the largest Chinese grocery markets in New England, Kam Man, is located on Quincy Avenue in President's Plaza along with chains of other Asian restaurants and retailers, and several banks cater to an increasingly multilingual clientele.

Bilingual health care and public assistance programs are also beginning to provide services and educational programming. For instance, South Cove Community Health Center, located in Boston and North Quincy, specifically provides bilingual services to the Asian community with a special focus on the underserved and low income. The majority of their staff speaks Chinese, Vietnamese, and/or Cambodian dialects.

While services are quickly increasing, there is still a long way to go. A large number of Asian Americans in Quincy are recent immigrants, creating a high demand for affordable ESOL classes geared toward adults. Additionally, recent immigrants and long term residents alike face particular difficulty in reaching culturally and linguistically appropriate services. It is in these situations where QARI can take the lead and work with its large network of Institutional Members and partner organizations to effectively meet the needs of individuals and the community.
