Collaborative Projects

Cultural Competency Program with Quincy Medical Center
The growing number of patients with bilingual needs in Asian language translation is increasing the demand of more culturally competent health services. QARI is working closely with Quincy Medical Center to assess the needs for the growing Asian population. Current successful models of Asian-targeted health services can be seen in South Cove Community Health Center whose clinics started in Boston Chinatown. Educating and increasing the number of health providers and health aides who are aware of language and cultural differences will better the efficiency and effectiveness of services. It will also avoid any barriers or misunderstandings in the future as Asian immigrants look for health services in the nearby community.

Basic Computer Skills Class
The increasing need for computer competency in addition to a background in english language is a need for many Asian adults looking for work. Basic skills such as word processing and using the internet provides a way for adults to better access more information on the web and also create professional documents such as business letters and resumes on a word processing program. Learning Links is a computer center that provides free internet and computer access to persons of low-income. QARI is working in collaboration with Learning Links to design an evening bilingual computer class that provides instruction to people with limited english proficiency. The class is a way for persons to practice their english skills in the context of using computer technology. Classes are taught in english with a Chinese language assistance as necessary.

Tuberculosis Health Prevention Education Program and Video
Last year Quincy had the highest rate per capita of TB incidents within the State of Massachussetts. One of the growing health concerns for recent immigrants to the United States is getting tested for tuberculosis. Tuberculosis is not necessarily a fatal disease but is easily spread through a population if not caught early on. One of the highest rates of TB are found within Asia. Because of less efficient public health and TB control programs within countries such as China and Southeast Asia, recent immigrants are less aware of whether they are infected with TB when coming to this country. As a result QARI is working with the Department of Public Health (DPH) to design a bilingual educational video (in Cantonese) to demonstrate the need for testing and also provide basic information describing the symptoms and signs of tuberculosis. Health professionals featured on the video will be Dr. John Bernardo a long-time doctor and researcher on the worldwide spread of tuberculosis and Yin Leung a bilingual health educator at DPH. The video will air on QATV. [Please contact QATV station for airing times]

Lunar New Year 2005
QARI is planning the Lunar New Year for 2005 at North Quincy High School. The event will involve the students of North Quincy High School in addition to other members of the community. This is a festival to celebrate Asian heritage and the tradition of Chinese New Year. Programs are designed for all ages and families. Local business sponsorship helps support the festival, and provides entertainment with vendor booths and food stands. [Schedule Details]
