Background of Quincy

Quincy, MA is fast gaining the name as Boston's second Chinatown. In the city of Quincy, there was a 140% growth in persons who identified themselves as Asian between 1990 and 2000, according to the U.S. Census bureau of 2000. This latest phenomenon in the boom of Asians in the area is similar to the development of Flushing in the suburbs of New York City, which competes closely with NYC's recognized Chinatown.
A large number of businesses and social services in Quincy are recognizing the turn in the tide with the increasing presence of bilingual customers and clients. As Asian Americans branch out from living close to Chinatown they are looking for services that they can access more locally.
Quincy is a prime location for affordable housing, good schools, and is a nearby location to the subway T. In the past couple years, more and more Chinese marketplaces and banks have opened up in the area. One of the largest chinese grocery markets, Kam Man, is located on Quincy Avenue in President's Plaza along with chains of other Asian restaurants and retailers. Asian American Bank recently opened up a branch in North Quincy. Their services our tailored towards Asian language speakers interested in banking locally.
Health care and public assistance programs are also beginning to provide bilingual services and educational programming. South Cove Community Health Center, located in Boston and North Quincy, specifically provides bilingual services to the Asian community with a special focus on the underserved and low income. The majority of their staff speak Chinese, Vietnamese, and/or Cambodian.
Since a large number of Asian Americans in Quincy are recent immigrants, ESOL classes are in high demand. Classes provide immigrants with an opportunity to learn to speak and write english. A number of programs of different levels and intensity are offered in the area.
